Beardruff: What Causes It and How to Get Rid of It for Good

If you've noticed white flakes in your beard or on your shirt collar, you've got what's commonly called "beardruff" — dry, flaking skin underneath the beard. It's genuinely common, not a sign of poor hygiene, and it's fixable with the right routine.

What Actually Causes Beardruff

Beardruff is essentially dry skin (or in some cases mild seborrheic dermatitis) happening underneath the beard, where it's less visible and easy to ignore until flakes show up. A few things make it worse specifically for bearded men: beard hair traps dead skin cells against the face instead of letting them shed naturally, harsh soaps or regular shampoo strip natural oils from the skin and make dryness worse, and simply not moisturising the skin underneath the beard (as opposed to just the hair itself) leaves it under-cared for compared to the rest of your face.

The Fix Is the Same Two-Part Routine, Done Properly

Part 1 — Clean without stripping. This is where a lot of guys get it backwards, either not washing enough or using a normal shampoo that's too harsh. Our Eleven Mile Beard & Face Wash uses charcoal to lift dead skin and built-up debris without over-drying, while B vitamins support the skin as it's cleaned rather than just stripping it. Used a few times a week (not necessarily daily if skin is already dry), it clears the dead skin buildup that beardruff feeds on.

Part 2 — Moisturise the skin, not just the hair. This is the step most guys skip entirely. When applying oil, it needs to actually reach the skin underneath, not just coat the visible hair. IRON Beard Oil's cupuacu butter and meadowfoam oil combination is built for genuine, lasting hydration at the skin level, addressing the dryness that causes flaking in the first place rather than just making the beard look shinier on the surface.

How to Apply Oil Properly to Fix Beardruff

Technique matters here. Apply oil to slightly damp skin (straight after a shower works well), and use your fingertips to work it all the way down to the skin — not just brushing it over the surface of the hair. A few drops massaged in properly reaches further and does more than a large amount applied only to the visible hair.

When It's More Than Just Dryness

If flaking persists despite consistent washing and oiling, or comes with redness and itching beyond normal dryness, it may be seborrheic dermatitis, which sometimes needs a medicated approach beyond skincare alone — worth a chat with a pharmacist or doctor if the basic routine doesn't clear it up within a few weeks.

The Bottom Line

Beardruff isn't a hygiene failure — it's a skin-care gap most routines don't address, because they treat the beard like it's separate from the skin underneath. Clean without stripping, moisturise all the way to the skin, and the flaking genuinely clears up for most guys within a couple of weeks.
