How Much Beard Oil Should You Use, and How Often?

Most blokes either drown their beard in oil or barely use any. Here's how to get it right.

How much beard oil to use

Beard length Drops
Stubble to short (under 2.5 cm) 2 to 3
Medium (2.5 to 10 cm) 4 to 6
Long (over 10 cm) 6 to 10+

Thick or dry beards may need a couple more. Start at the low end and add a drop if it still feels dry.

How often to use it

Once a day is right for most beards. The best time is straight after your shower, while your beard is still damp, because damp hair takes in the oil better. If you're out in sun, wind or air-con all day, a second light application in the evening helps.

How to apply it

  1. Towel your beard until it's damp, not dripping.
  2. Put the drops in your palm and rub your hands together.
  3. Work it into the skin first, using your fingertips under the beard.
  4. Then run your hands down through the hair to the ends.
  5. Finish with a brush or comb to spread it evenly.

Signs you're using too much

  • Your beard looks shiny or wet hours later
  • It feels greasy to touch or leaves marks on your pillow
  • The hair looks flat and clumps together

Signs you're using too little

  • The ends feel dry or wiry
  • The skin underneath itches or flakes
  • It's hard to brush through
